A little more background on our potluck this Saturday, the 19th of February. We are getting ready for the spring/summer season in our little 1/2 acre garden. We are interested in information about what people would like to eat so that we can adjust our plantings accordingly. At a minimum, we will be posting information about the availability of vegetables which people can review and contact us about purchase. Dancing Dog is willing to consider a type of Community Supported Agriculture relationship with our family of patrons. I'm not that thrilled personally with you pay a fixed amount and get whatever vegetables that are available. I would be more inclined to create a regular ordering arrangement where patrons can pick what vegetables they wish. Getting advanced payment for vegetables, like some CSA's, is not critical, because we are not front ending a lot of capital to grow the food.
Dancing Dog is willing to provide logistical support for a "Buyer's Club" that would allow people interested in vegetables and meat products that Dancing Dog cannot provide to purchase from other growers. We may be a centralized point of purchase and distribution. Interesting that the Briar Patch Food Coop in Grass Valley, which is very successful and dedicated to buying from local growers, is only purchasing about 10% of its food locally. We may consider making purchasing arrangements from local growers from outside our immediately area, if necessary. All buyers who wish to support locally grown food will do better by pooling their purchasing power. It also reduces some of the time and inefficiency of individual buyers being required to visit multiple locations to do their purchasing.
Finally, it is our desire to foster fellowship around food, health, and lifestyle, of which our garden is only a part. To this end, we would like to support a continuing get together (e.g. monthly) at our place where we can share our experience about food, health, lifestyle, recreation, quality of life, and support each other in being Well in the full sense of that word. Gathering in and around food is an ancient tradition.
So, all are welcome, this Saturday, 12:00pm to 2:00. See the blog notice. Jeff Bordelon
