Joel Salatin on Why Food, Farms, and Eating Local Matter

Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm in Virginia was mentioned at the Placer Sustain "Local Food" meeting on August 16th. Salatin is a self-described "environmental capitalist lunatic farmer" and was profiled by Michael Pollan in The Omnivore's Dilemma. He also spoke earlier this year at a Nevada County Grown event. Foraging Freegans

A story about folks who forage for food, clothing, etc. in dumpsters earning them the name "freegans."  Our society throws away about 38 million tons of food annually and not all of it is rotten or unusable.  The freegans search out the edible or usable food.
